ATHENS, Ohio -- Butch Baird can usually be seen in his crisp, white Southern Ohio Copperheads jersey. For one game, he can trade that one in for a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star jersey.
Right now, Baird sits at 1-1 on the season with a 2.19 earned run average. Baird has also added 33 strikeouts, good for second in the league behind teammate Aaron Ochsenbein.
Formerly a Louisville Cardinal, Baird will be entering his senior season for the Ohio in the fall. For the Copperheads, Baird is a top of the rotation starter.
Against the pressure of a first-place team, Baird went to the mound and put out his best start. Eight innings pitched against the Cincinnati Steam earned him a win coupled with nine strikeouts and zero earned runs.
The left-hander also went off in a losing effort to the Hamilton Joes. A complete game in a contest that was extended by a rain suspension, Baird allowed four runs -- three earned -- while striking out 13 batters and walking one.
Baird has an astonishing strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out almost five batters for every walk.
When Baird walks onto a baseball field, he brings a swagger as well as punishing stuff on every pitch he throws.
The GLSCL All-Star Game will be played on July 18th. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
