Lady Chargers Battle Hard in East Tennessee, Secure Win Against Pellissippi State
The Columbia State Lady Chargers hit the road for a tough series in East Tennessee, facing Walters State and Pellissippi State. Despite early struggles, they capped off the trip with a victory against Pellissippi.
On Thursday, March 13, the Lady Chargers took on Walters State in a doubleheader. Game one proved challenging, with Columbia State managing just four hits in a 14-1 loss. Jaylee Warren took the loss, pitching two innings while allowing nine hits and five earned runs. Samantha Staggs led the offense, going 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jaelyn Luke, Abigail Brown, and Reagan Burleson each added a hit.
Game two was a much tighter contest, stretching into extra innings before Walters State secured a 6-5 win in the ninth. Jayla Davenport shined at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, while Staggs contributed a double and three RBIs. Jaides Parrish recorded a 2-for-4 performance, with Brown and Burleson also collecting hits. Staggs went the distance in the circle, pitching all nine innings and allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in a gritty effort.
The Lady Chargers continued their road trip on Friday, March 14, facing Pellissippi State in Knoxville. The first game resulted in a 14-6 loss, despite solid offensive contributions. Staggs went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Brown was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Davenport, Birdsong, Parrish, Arel, Luke, and Burleson each added a hit. Warren took the loss, pitching four innings and surrendering seven hits with two earned runs.
In the final game of the trip, the Lady Chargers found their rhythm, securing a 13-5 victory over Pellissippi. Madison Arel delivered a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in three runs. Birdsong added a 2-for-3 outing with a double and an RBI, while Davenport, Parrish, and Staggs contributed key hits. Staggs dominated in the circle, pitching five shutout innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just five hits and no earned runs.
The Lady Chargers will look to build on their momentum when they return to action on Tuesday at Ridley Park for the Mid-State Classic against Calhoun Community College.
