Chargers Baseball Sweeps Opening Weekend of TCCAA Play
The Columbia State Chargers baseball team kicked off their TCCAA conference play in dominant fashion, securing two victories against Dyersburg State on Friday, February 14. With these wins, the Chargers start conference play at 2-0.
In game one, the Chargers delivered a commanding 12-1 victory. Pitcher Jake Cardin went the distance, throwing five innings while allowing just five hits, one earned run, and striking out five batters. The Chargers' offense exploded with 11 hits, led by Hutson Miles, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, a triple, and an impressive six RBIs. Jackson Riedling contributed by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Clint Seymore also had a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Derek Valentino-Luciano (2-for-2, double) and Tyler Jenkins (2-for-2, RBI) rounded out the offensive surge.
Game two showcased the Chargers' resilience as they mounted a comeback to defeat Dyersburg State 8-6. Trailing 5-0 heading into the fifth inning, Columbia State rallied to tie the game before securing the win. Tyler Jenkins had another stellar performance, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a home run, and an RBI. Russ Lambert also contributed, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hutson Miles, Arturo Rodriguez, Brady Hendrix, and Michael McClellan each added a hit. Jay Watson earned the win on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four hits, one earned run, and recording two strikeouts.
The Chargers will look to continue their strong start as they hit the road again on Tuesday, Feb. 18, to face Wallace State in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
